JALISCO
The home of tequila and mariachi, and of Luis Barragán, whose early houses still stand in Guadalajara. José Clemente Orozco’s murals fill the chapel dome of the Hospicio Cabañas, a UNESCO site and one of the great mural cycles of the twentieth century. Guadalajara has a young gallery and design scene, and the potters of Tlaquepaque and Tonalá are minutes away. An hour out of the city, blue agave covers the hills around Tequila. On the coast, Costalegre and Careyes are our favourite stretch of Pacific: villas, empty beaches and very few roads.
