OAXACA

Mezcal valleys, Zapotec weavers and a food scene worth building a week around. We time this one to late October, when the markets are at their most alive. Oaxaca is also one of Mexico’s great art cities: Francisco Toledo founded the graphic arts institute IAGO and the San Agustín arts centre in Etla, and the printmaking workshops he inspired are still working. In Teotitlán del Valle, families dye wool with cochineal and indigo and weave on the loom at home. On the coast, Casa Wabi, the artists’ residency in a Tadao Ando building, is worth the drive.
